VALUES-IN-ACTION (VIA) PROJECT WITH ACSI YEAR 3 STUDENTS (2023)
As part of their Humanities exposure and VIA efforts, we partnered ACS Independent Year 3 students from July to October 2023 to bring them through a programme from head, heart to hands.
The students kicked off their learning about the migrant community through our in-class lessons on motivations of migration and understanding prejudice.
“Migrant workers are people just like us, with their own unique identities and challenges. We should stop discriminating against them and treat them with kindness.”
LEARNING JOURNEY: JULY 2023
2 weeks after their lesson, they went on a 6-stations learning journey at Little India/Farrer Park to delve deeper into the experiences and challenges of a migrant worker living in Singapore.
“The sharing by the migrant worker added a level of depth to my understanding of the situation. Previously it felt more like a third-person perspective; this was more interactive and engaging.”
PLANNING OF VIA: AUGUST 2023
Throughout August to October, the class brainstormed ideas for possible events to be held with Special Pass holders from SG Accident Help Centre and prepared goodie begs and appreciation cards.
EXECUTION: OCTOBER 2023
On 26 October, the class hosted 12 Special Pass holders at Gardens by the Bay. The students led the migrant workers to tour the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. Thereafter, they ended the night by having dinner together and also put up performances to entertain the migrant workers.
“Many of us are quite shy and quiet, but for the outing, we encouraged one another to engage the workers in conversation. Through this experience, I learned more about the migrant worker community and realised they aren’t as different as I thought they were.”
